Summary

5 unique Tools 。。。 3 seconds each to use 。。。 A lifetime of fulfilment

Can you imagine what your life would be like if you could tap into a new source of power – one that has been inside you all along – to solve your own problems and become the master of your life?

The Tools is an extraordinary psychological model based on the proven methods of Hollywood's greatest psychotherapists。 Phil Stutz and Barry Michels have over 60 years of psychotherapeutic experience between them。 Together they have helped their A-list clients work through whatever has held them back – be it insecurity, trauma, anger, lack of willpower, negativity or avoidance – to achieve their greatest work and find a deep level of fulfilment。

Now, at last, the acclaimed clinicians are sharing their methods in this eye-opening and empowering book。 Introducing their five simple techniques, namely The Reversal of Desire, Active Love, Inner Authority, The Grateful Flow and Jeopardy, the authors clearly explain what they are plus how and when to use them。 Astonishingly effective and beautifully simple – once you've learned a tool it takes only three to five seconds to use it – this book will give you everything you need to propel yourself forward to achieve your ambitions and be who you were born to be。

great adviceVery practical advice on using mindfulness and tools to change one’s life。 I felt that this was an advancement on Jung’s Shadow theory。

2。5 I wanted to like this book。 But ultimately it was a bit too woo-woo for me。 I’m sure the tools they mention do work for some people but found it hard to relate to them。 This is one of the books where the title is definitely “clickbait。” The one point I did like was how they said problems teach us new skills。Listened to the audio book, it was kind of a slog。 Wish I gleaned more from it but couldn’t really relate to the concepts much。 Would recommend skipping this book and either finding a bet 2。5 I wanted to like this book。 But ultimately it was a bit too woo-woo for me。 I’m sure the tools they mention do work for some people but found it hard to relate to them。 This is one of the books where the title is definitely “clickbait。” The one point I did like was how they said problems teach us new skills。Listened to the audio book, it was kind of a slog。 Wish I gleaned more from it but couldn’t really relate to the concepts much。 Would recommend skipping this book and either finding a better self help book, or working with a good therapist。 Either option will probably help you more than this book 。。。more

I have a very strong affinity to the core message of this book: don't be a consumer, be a creator。 Being a consumer leads to focusing on what is outside of us, and how to obtain it, but then once we have it, we remain unsatisfied as there is always more to consume。 Ah-ha moment for me was when they applied consumerism to information using examples of podcasts and books。。。 if you don't use the information to make changes and take action, it's simply another form of consumerism。 You'll notice that I have a very strong affinity to the core message of this book: don't be a consumer, be a creator。 Being a consumer leads to focusing on what is outside of us, and how to obtain it, but then once we have it, we remain unsatisfied as there is always more to consume。 Ah-ha moment for me was when they applied consumerism to information using examples of podcasts and books。。。 if you don't use the information to make changes and take action, it's simply another form of consumerism。 You'll notice that my recent book reviews on here have a section on action(s) I'll take as a result of reading the book being reviewed - that was driven by this book。 The 5 tools in this book are practical, and I'm already using them with positive outcomes。 Highly recommend this book。Key takeaways:-listening to audiobooks and podcasts at 2x without applying the learnings is simply another form of consumerism-there is always more to consume, it won't make you happyThe 5 tools:1。 Reversal of Desire: express a desire for pain - that area outside our comfort zone。 By being willing to experience pain, we have opportunities to reach out full potential2。 Active Love: when someone upsets or provokes you, gather up love, direct it to the individual, and imagine them feeling receipt of your love。。。 then move on with your life。 3。 Inner Authority: we all have a shadow, a version of ourselves that we are ashamed of。 Imagine your shadow is always next to you, speak with your shadow in one voice。4。 The grateful flow: when you experience being in a Black Cloud, practice extreme gratitude e。g。 identify something you take for granted and be grateful for it5。 Jeopardy: know that at any moment we can lose it all。 Use this as a positive motivator to drive you to your fullest potentialAction(s) I will take as a result:-basically all 5 tools above。 I have already been using Active Love on a regular basis with someone in my life that provokes me。 It works。 Inner authority is an interesting one that I've also used a few times already, specifically when conducting meetings - it's provided me with confidence that I'm bringing my most authentic self forward。 。。。more

What fascinates me about this book is that it started on this high-energy note and made me pumped about using the "tools", but ended with this flaccid drivel about "new spirituality", prophesizing the doomsday driven by consumerism。 The authors couldn't resist to take a page out of Ron Hubbard's playbook (Dianetics -> Scientology)。First, the Tools。 Those who ever walked into a therapist's office with anxiety or depression, probably were taught the "mindfulness" exercise, where you focus your att What fascinates me about this book is that it started on this high-energy note and made me pumped about using the "tools", but ended with this flaccid drivel about "new spirituality", prophesizing the doomsday driven by consumerism。 The authors couldn't resist to take a page out of Ron Hubbard's playbook (Dianetics -> Scientology)。First, the Tools。 Those who ever walked into a therapist's office with anxiety or depression, probably were taught the "mindfulness" exercise, where you focus your attention on immediate perceptions, to alleviate how you feel about upcoming future。 Well, mindfulness is a psychiatric tool。 This book teaches 5 other similar tools whose purpose is to overcome aversion to things we don't want to do, overcome hate/resentment towards other people, learn how to stop being nervous with things like presentations, how to be grateful with what you have, and how to grow your willpower。While I haven't had much time to use the tools yet, I'm positive they do work, similar to "mindfulness" exercise。 The tool they called "Active Love" did make me feel better about "idiot" drivers in traffic。 The tools are great。 The writing has nice energy and the author includes stories about patients from his psychiatric practice, which are interesting。 If you ever watched "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey—the book has that feel。 With the main author often referencing what co-author Phil taught him, similar to how main character's friend in that movie gives him some advice。The problem isn't the Tools。 It's the dive into the supernatural, which ramps up pace as the book goes on。 In the first two chapters, there's simply a brief allusion to "higher forces" that the tools invoke。 You can easily assume the authors are being metaphorical; the supernatural stuff takes barely a couple of sentences。 However, by third tool, the authors start ramping it up。 The bible is quoted 4 times and a (nonsensical) story from a rabbi is taken as some grand truth。 And it gets worse。The last two chapters are full-on indoctrination mode。 In first of them, the author spends several pages describing how his "rationalism" was destroyed and all-in-all how silly atheists are。 He makes appeasement to religious people, saying he's fine if they think his "higher forces" come from god。 He's not a fan of religion however, and so he concludes that what the two authors came up with is "new spirituality"。 He describes that it's different from New Age stuff, because his isn't all about happy stuff, and that his finds empowerment in suffering (oh, how biblical)。The second of those chapters is about how horrible our society is。 It's basically the end times, and it's only through "new spirituality" that it can be fixed。 The authors go through their tools again, clumsily saying for each that if it's good for you, imagine if it was good for EVERYONE! The chapter for the 5th tool says that using the Tools is a life-long commitment, and if you ever stop, all the bad things you had will return。 This end-times chapter reiterates that promise, now with the two authors directly saying to the reader "we won't be happy" unless you commit to using the Tools forever。 The very last page laughably makes the claim the authors aren't seeking adherents to their "new spirituality", only that the people use their Tools for life。It would be a fairly good book, if you'd cut out 120 pages of "spirituality" waffle。 As other reviewers suggested: read the first 4 tools and then burn the book。 The chapter for the 5th tool is basically "remember you gonna die someday" that then transitions into supernatural stuff。 The rest of the chapters are indoctrination。 。。。more

Plenty of good nuggets, so I'm giving it a high rating even though I don't believe them for the reasons the authors clearly hope I will。Another reviewer pointed out that techniques should be double-blind tested before they become treatment standards。 Totally agree! Mentioned by a friend and sounded interesting, so I gave it a read。 Some of the tools themselves may have utility, and the authors have a few good insights about what drives certain types of behaviour。 However, they started losing me around the talk of 'higher forces'。 Not that I am saying there are or are not higher forces, but my level of cynicism goes up when people think that any such forces can be explained or predicted。 Mentioned by a friend and sounded interesting, so I gave it a read。 Some of the tools themselves may have utility, and the authors have a few good insights about what drives certain types of behaviour。 However, they started losing me around the talk of 'higher forces'。 Not that I am saying there are or are not higher forces, but my level of cynicism goes up when people think that any such forces can be explained or predicted。 。。。more

This book gave me a direction a question I had for a long time。 How do I work more closely with my shadow and harness its powers? The question stems from if we want to be the best versions of ourselves, then we should tap into both the light and dark forces and play with the whole gamut of potential within us。 There's power in things we've ignored。 The reason being is because there's shame and guilt in the things we don't want to look at。 But if we are able to accept and come through to the other This book gave me a direction a question I had for a long time。 How do I work more closely with my shadow and harness its powers? The question stems from if we want to be the best versions of ourselves, then we should tap into both the light and dark forces and play with the whole gamut of potential within us。 There's power in things we've ignored。 The reason being is because there's shame and guilt in the things we don't want to look at。 But if we are able to accept and come through to the other side of those feelings; there's empowerment and internal fortitude。That process of doing the things we are scared of or challenges that we act on in the face of fear is one of the tools called "The Reverse of Desire。" We're our potential lies on the other side of the challenges we face。 And we can harness that potential as soon as we face it; including the challenges of looking at our shadow and darker past。What started out as a search from this book, I discovered multiple answers。 As mentioned above, another tool was working with our Shadow, the part of our past that we've ignored or have shame around, and rebuild that relationship。 Once that occurs with conscious effort, some very interesting magic happens。 It's a very "meta" process, but if we're open to the idea what this book thought me was a deeper understanding of the spiritual dimension which the book refers to as "Higher Forces。"It does so with no dogma behind religion or any affiliation。 But just a pure pathway beyond consciousness and the ego。 We can call these "Higher Forces" as the subconscious, the unconscious, the collective, the universe, energy, Qi Gong, charkas, Allah, daimon, or God。 The book doesn't care about the label, from my interpretation, it's all the same forces behind what we call it。 The authors are psychotherapists and at the end of the day; they just want to heal people through these tools presented。And this magic pipe into the spiritual dimension was my biggest take from this book which I'm blessed to have the opportunity to read, learn from, and apply in my life。 。。。more
